New releases and a salute to 617 Sqn 70 years after their legendary May 16th-17th 1943 mission involving 133 men in 19 aircraft, piloted by mainly 20 year olds,
flying in 3 waves on a
suicide mission to destroy dams in the Ruhr Valley - 3 developed engine trouble and aborted the mission, 5 became lost and
ultimately only 11 remained to attack the dams flying at
230mph at exactly 60 feet above the water in huge Lancaster bombers to deliver the specifically designed, and thus basically untested bouncing bombs. Of those
11, 8 returned intact and 3
were lost for a total of 53 men killed and 3 taken POW - 617 Sqn, The Dambusters, became and remain the stuff of legend...
