Tonight a program of brand new releases
including a North American radio debut, a recent acquisition of a 1994 reissue
from the excellent Johnny Coppin (ex-Decameron), and a couple of performers
who will be performing for Little Rock Folk Club this Sat Oct 5th.:-
The Tea Cups - an acapella quartet of
final year Newcastle University folk music degree students who have spent the
past 12 months or so performing on the UK folk festival circuit where they
have clearly worked out the various vocal arrangements of their excellent
debut album One For The Pot which contains seamless traditional and
contemporary songs presented with verve and confidence and bringing new luster
to such hardy perennials as T Stands For Thomas and As I Roved Out along the
way;
Childsplay – a sixth (!) release from this ever evolving New England
feast of 14 fiddlers which includes all-Ireland and National Scottish Fiddle
champions, and a stellar full bodied instrumental accompaniment, playing
fiddles created by bespoke violin-maker Bob Childs and encompassing a broad
swath of musical styles from familiar Irish traditional session favorites to
Old Time, pop, Appalachian all gloriously melded together in seamless harmony
and crowning the entire project the periodic songs performed by fiddler Lissa
Schneckenburger whose voice is a thing of beauty unto itself;
Johnny Coppin – formerly of the much-loved band Decameron,
song-writer/composer, superb vocalist, pianist, guitarist, author and BBC
radio presenter who has championed the beauty of his adopted home county of
Gloucestershire since his first solo album in 1978, on this release he has
gathered 26 tracks from his impressive catalog of Gloucestershire poetry
including the Poet Laureate John Masefield, F W Harvey, Ivor Gurney, Laurie
Lee all married to beautiful and sympathetic Coppin melodies; with the renewed
currency that World War 1 poets are inevitably experiencing as the 100th
anniversary of WW1 approaches doubtlessly this 1994 compilation will hopefully
receive some new and well deserved recognition; ever quintessentially English
in his own excellent compositions, Coppin's delight in his home county is a
paean of universal appeal;
Thereafter – based around the splendid song and tune-smithing talents
of well established duo Neil and Keona Hammond, Vancouver-based Thereafter
includes Juno Award winners and seasoned veterans from Montreal's jazz, ballet
and dance scene to produce an album of superb musicianship and musicality
including traditional songs sitting comfortably alongside their own
compositions to which they have added tunes from Sharon Shannon, Michael
McGoldrick, Donald Shaw, and Sweden's Morten Hoirup - with soaring vocals,
guitar, flute,cello, violin and cajon Thereafter's debut cd exemplifies 5
musicians at the top of their respective games;
Clannad – on this their 18th
release since 1973 Clannad present their first release of new music since
Grammy-winning Landmarks (1998) and their first album since The Angel And The
Soldierboy (1989) comprising the original Clannad lineup of Brennans and
Duggans in their entirety; and in the interim they haven't skipped a beat as
Nadur (Nature) clearly demonstrates with lush arrangements of traditional and
contemporary song sung as ever in Gaelic and English and featuring the soaring
and atmospheric vocals of Moya Brennan on songs celebrating the Book of Kells,
Irish mythology and lamenting the consequences of over-fishing on the
industrial scale that exploded in the late 60s and early seventies in the
coastal waters around Ireland
Boston-based guitar virtuoso Peter Janson
and native Arkansas 6 & 12 string wizard Steve Davison perform in
concert with Little Rock Folk Club on Sat Oct 5th,
