Brand new releases, a 2012 reissue of songs from the
1970's musician Sexto Rodriguez that went AWOL until recently rediscovered
whilst looking for something else! Also, Kate Campbell ahead of her Little
Rock Folk Club concert 11/23/13 and farewell to Austin John Marshall, the
remarkably prolific but under-recognized Phil Spector Of Folk Rock whose
masterful Dancing At Whitsun first appeared in the epic 28 minute A Song-Story
(Medley)on Shirley & Dolly Collins' Anthems In Eden, who died peacefully
in NYC 11/3/13:
Barrule - Isle of Man trio of 19 year old fiddler Tomas Callister, accordion
wizard Jamie Smith (Mabon) and Adam Rhodes (Mabon/King Chiaulee) on bouzouki,
playing gorgeous traditional and contemporary Manx tunes and songs augmented
by select guests including Welsh guitar wizard Dylan Fowler, Scotland's
Malcolm Stitt (Deaf Shepherd/Tannas/Boys Of The Lough) on acoustic guitar and
guest vocals and song writing on a couple of tracks from Gregory Joughlin
singing in both Manx and English. Instrumentation includes piano accordion,
acoustic guitar, tenor banjo, fiddle, bouzouki, zouk bass, lap steel, tabwrdd
(no, not a typo!), piano, hurdy gurdy and bodhran. Material covered includes
jigs, reels, slow airs and marches played with precision, passion and a dab of
panache - a superb introduction to the generally under-known musical tradition
of this small island which is part of the Celtic nations and excellent
Manx-English documentation in the accompanying booklet concerning the songs
and tunes;
Heather Pierson - this is the 6th release (!) from Joplin MO born, Maine
raised tho' now Hampshire based, Americana singer-songwriter and
multi-instrumentalist with a powerful voice that occasionally seems to
overpower her at the cost of the truly lovely sweetness much in evidence when
singing her quiter compositions. She is the 2012 New England Songwriting
contest with her song "Hard Man To please"; material covers the
heartache/heartbreak spectrum, the vagaries of Life, relationships, families
and music styles include Americana, gospel, and blues and bluegrass roots
Kate Campbell - Eudora Welty/William Faulkner with a guitar and a piano! In
concert with Little Rock Folk Club 11/23/13
The Henry Girls - Three gloriously harmonising multi-instrumentalist sisters
from Donegal with their 4th release which contains a fine collection of
original songs, and 4 covers including a lovely film noir cabaret treatment of
Elvis Costello's Watching The Detectives, and the American trad classic Rain
And Snow. Previous songs from them have garnered nominations for Irish Film
And Television Award for Best Original Score, and they also appeared on Mary
Black's most recent album Stories from the Steeples. Instrumentation includes
harp, banjo, fiddle, viola, piano, mandolin, accordion, guitar and ukelele and
they switch between instruments with ease. To this armament of instrumental
possibilites they have added guest appearances on fiddle, dobro, drums, double
bass and African kora;
Hilary James & Janet Giraudo - mellifluous sisters living 1000 miles
apart, England and southern France respectively, finally release their debut
album after 30 years with multi-instrumentalist and producer Simon Mayor at
the helm resulting in a glorious pot-pourri of Parisian tangos, English folk
songs, baroque and popular song from past centuries comprising the French
carol Un Flambeau, Jeanette, Issabelle, , Vivaldi's Laudamus Te, songs from
pre-WWII French chanteuse Rina Ketty's catalogue, a couple of English trad
chestnuts and a couple of English poems set to music by the maestro Simon
Mayor ably abetted by accomplished double bassist, guitarist and mando-bassist
Hilary who together double up to form one half of Britain's first modern
mandolin quartet The Mandolinquents;
Sixto Rodriguez - Detroit born son of Mexican immigrants who recorded 2 albums
between 1970-71 which made no impact here in the US following which he went on
to pursue a non-music career working blue-collar jobs that kept him near
poverty ...
Meanwhile, halfway across the world in South Africa, Botswana, Rhodesia ( now
Zimbabwe), New Zealand and Australia his politically charged albums were
taking off resulting in an Australian compilation album going platinum even
though most fans believed he was dead from a suicide at this time. Searching
For Sugarman is a BAFTA and GRAMMY winning Swedish documentary about efforts
by 2 South African fans to discover if his rumoured death was true; recorded
back in the 70s but sadly just as today as back then;
