Eddi Reader: 13th solo album from this
Scottish singer-songwriter, and former chart-topping Fairground Attraction
front-woman, (and 2006 MBE recipient!) who has evidenced an ability to
absorb a wide variety of musical styles incorporating her own songs,
co-writes with longtime writing partner Boo Hewerdine
and husband John Douglas (Trashcan Sinatras),
select traditional material (assisted on this occasion by Capercaillie's lovely Karen Matheson) and superb
contemporary songs that she borrows and then stamps with her own indelible
watermark. Supported by a longtime group of touring musicians, honed by
constant touring to musical perfection, who provide the perfect foundation
upon which her stunning voice floats and soars - magic!;
Martin Green: solo project from Scottish band Lau's accordion player
aided and abetted by Becky Unthank (The Unthanks), Shetland Islander Inge Thomson (Harem Scarem, Karine Polwart Band) and
Swedish nyckleharpa Niklas
Roswell, that produces a spine-tingling album of traditional and
contemporary songs about ghosts and life beyond the grave, admittedly an
already favorite topic within traditional folk songs, that gains added
presence and foreboding from the musical arrangements and generated transient
sounds that heighten the sense of other-worldliness... Well, the Halloween
program for this year looks like it will have an excellent addition...
probably best not listen to this album on headphones if you are home
alone!;
Martin Carthy (MBE 1998) & Eliza Carthy (MBE 2014): Having previously recorded a superb
album with her mother Norma Waterson (Gift 2010),
it seems only fair that dad Martin should have one too... To 2 solo and
harmony voices, a fiddle and a guitar, add 8 glorious traditional songs, a
superb Michael Marra song, a classic poem
"The Blind Men and the Elephant" re-tuned for the occasion by
Eliza, and then add a completely unexpected and shimmering
"Happiness" from the exquisite pen of Molly Drake - mother of
Nick (check out mollydrake.bandcamp.com/ ), place in a CD player sit back
and enjoy the next 48 minutes and the enjoyable and interesting source
notes in the accompanying booklet - superb!;
James Findlay, Bella Hardy, Brian Peters, Lucy Ward: inadequate
superlatives on hand to describe this collection of wonderful award winning
musicians who gathered together for this project which derives from the
Penguin Book of English Folk Songs compiled and edited by Ralph Vaughan
Williams and A. L. Lloyd in 1959 and the subsequent release the following
year of an LP and EP of songs from the book by Lloyd. In 1986 Fellside updated the proceedings with the release of
"A Selection from The Penguin Book of English Folk Songs"
featuring Linda Adams, John Bowden, Martin Carthy,
Roy Harris and Jez Lowe. The New Penguin Book of
English Folk Songs expands greatly upon the original and contains twice as
many songs and informative notes about history behind the songs. Songs of
love, lust, loss and murder and body counts that would make a gangsta
rapper positively pedestrian!
Ninebarrow - 2nd release, the first was a very
well received 6 track EP entitled "Kingdom" which won the #1 spot
in Drunkenwerewolf Magazine's "Hidden
Acoustic Gems of 2013" award, from this Dorset-UK based duo comprising
Jon Whitely and James LaBouchardiere who mine the
contemporary folk song seam with wondrous songs aboutplaces,
events, history, the natural landscape and people from their county of
Dorset and up through England's Lake District and pay tribute to their trad roots with the inclusion of a traditional piece.
Combining glorious vocal harmonies, and Whitely's
multi-instrument arsenal including ukelele, tenor
mandola, harmonium and piano, with guest cello
from Lee Cuff (Kadia), viola from Jane Bridges
and mandocello from Bob Burke (Catherine Burke
Band). This album augurs well for both this duo and the future of both
contemporary and traditional folk song. Bravo guys!
