Rachel Sermanni: 2nd release from this 23 year
old Scottish singer/songwriter who has toured with Mumford And Sons, and
Elvis Costello, and inevitably drawn comparisons to the excellent Laura
Marling which can be no bad thing! Performing numerous live appearances her
hard work clearly pays off on this live recording of her appearance at
Dawson City, Yukon's folk festival - fabulous;
Ian Anderson: now in his mid-sixties,
Anderson thankfully shows no signs of slowing down and on this album he
presents images from past, present and future with all of the hallmarks of
a classic Tull album present, notwithstanding
that he alone is the sole remaining member from JT's This Was era through
all the many classic albums since then for which of course he wrote all the
songs and tunes;
Phillip Henry & Hannah Martin: a live recording (their fourth) from
this Award winning duo, and BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards 2014 "Best
Duo" nominees, comprising Lancastrian Henry on slide guitar,
harmonica, beat box and vocals and Devonian Martin on fiddle, banjo and
vocals; adopted by fellow Devonians Show of Hands to open their concert
tour, and as special guests for the SOH Royal Albert Hall 20th Anniversary
concert, plus multiple festival appearances the length and breadth of the UK,
have won them a solid and deservedly growing fan base;
The Duhks: award-winning Canadian outfit with
not-infrequent line up changes reminiscent of
vintage Fairport or Steeleye Span :-) On this
excellent release original singer Jessee Havey returns to the fold to accompany original banjo-supremo and vocalist Leonard Podolak
to produce an album of vocal delight and instrumental prodigiousness
covering traditional and contemporary songs from writers including Caroline
Herring, Beth Nielson Chapman, and Ruth Unger in addition to compositions from
Havey and Podolak;
John Malcolm Penn: a very enjoyable second album from this Californian
singer-songwriter who has been a Marine and a drag racer en route to today.
Comprising a wonderful mixture of interesting, often historically based
songs, and some lovely instrumentals, this album deserves to be widely
heard and is the fruit of years as a "work for hire" writer for
Screen Gems/Colgems and West Coast
"professional opening act" and backing musician for Freddy
Fender;
Frank Solivan & Dirty Kitchen: IBMA award
winning Nu-grass/bluegrass/jazz-blues outfit with superb musicianship to
spare! Front man Solivan, vocals, mandolin,
fiddle, spent 6 years in the Navy bluegrass band, band co-founder Mike
Munford on banjo, and new boys Chris Luquette on
guitar and Danny Booth on bass; joined by guests including Megan McCormick,
John Cowan, Rob Ickes and Sam Bush, this album cooks!
