Jennifer Crook - ably abetted by Beth Porter (Eliza Carthy
Band) on fiddle, double bass and harmony vocals, Mike Cosgrove (Jackie
Oates, Jackie Leven) on guitar, accordion and harmony vocals (collectively
The Jennifer Crook Trio) and further supported by musical guests comprising
recording veteran Kevin Brown (Shackdusters) on Weissenborn lap steel and electric guitar, and the
excellent Miranda Sykes (Show Of Hands) on double bass and harmony vocals;
multi-instrumentalist Crook (vocals, harp, guitar, banjo) follows up on her
critically acclaimed 2013 release Merry-Go-Round with an album of great
beauty incorporating trad Irish, bluegrass and
alt country/Americana rootsy melodies married to
thoughtful lyrics... superb!
Denise Black's Loose Screw - British theatre, music theatre (Actors'
Touring Company, Cambridge Touring Company, London's Donmar
Warehouse) and screen actress (Coronation Street - longest running soap
opera ever! and A Touch Of Frost, The Bill, Doc Martin amongst others) with
prior forays into jazz and numerous musicals and now adding songwriter to
her bow with fingerprints on 7 of the tracks on this release co-written
with the excellent Graeme Taylor (Gryphon, Home Service, Albion Band, plus
the National Theatre and The Royal Shakespeare Company) who displays some
of his lovely trademark guitar work, in addition to vocals and producing
the album. Assisted by Dedi Madden on acoustic
guitar, bass and vocals and Andy Dewar on drums and percussion, and Black's
autoharp this is an album of nicely minted pop songs played and sung with
obvious enjoyment;
Mike Nicholson - 3rd release from this late blooming bass baritone
singer/guitarist from West Sussex, UK with a lovely collection of traditional
material and some choice contemporary songs from writers not generally well
known this side of the pond including Cornwall's Roger Bryant (Remember Me
and All Gone Away) Steve Thomason's The Bard, Barry Wake's The Black Face
Miner, and the late Graeme Miles' Farndale
Daffodils amongst others. Accompanied by Eddie Hurdman
on fiddle, Simon Hurdman on banjo, mouth organ and bouzouki and
vocal choir consisting of Hilary Spencer (Artisan, Quicksilver), Derek
Gifford, Peter Collins and Pete Luscombe;
Brooks Williams - 20-something release from this masterful
singer/songwriter/guitarist, who is equally at home with blistering
traditional or self-penned acoustic blues or pure-Americana gold, which
combines both live audience studio tracks and straight forward studio
tracks demonstrating both his on stage charm and guitar pyrotechnics. Brooks
Williams will be in concert with Little Rock Folk Club on Sat Dec 7th -
here's a chance to give yourself an early Christmas gift!;
Kris Kristofferson, Steve Earle et al - a multiple artist all-star
revisit of Johnny Cash's 1964 release Bitter Tears: Ballads of the American
Indian featuring Emmylou Harris, Bill Miller, Gillian Welch & David
Rawlings, Norman and Nancy Blake, The Milk Carton Kids and Rhiannon Giddens
in addition to Earle and Kristofferson. Cash was disappointed and angry
with the original album's generally unnoticed release and 50 years later I
suspect he would be rather disappointed with the current state of affairs with
regard to the condition of native American Indians;
Sarah McQuaid – singer- songwriter and
dazzling guitarist making a welcomed return to Little Rock Folk Club on Sat
Oct 4th 2014 with her vast repertoire of trad and
self-penned gems, medieval/renaissance pieces and the occasional choice
contemporary piece such as John Martyn’s Solid Air fitted to her
purring vocals – heaven!
Claude Bourbon – French singer- songwriter and dazzling guitarist
also making a welcomed return to Little Rock Folk Club on Sat Sep 27th 2014
bringing along medieval and Spanish blues. Parfait!
