'Songs For The Voiceless' project - in the centenary year of the
outbreak of World War 1, Songs For The Voiceless is a Crowdfunded album
project bringing some of the lesser known stories of World War I to light.
This album is about the people the War impacted: men, women and children,
soldiers and civilians. All profits from sales of the album will be given to the national
Poppy Appeal. Project curator Michael J Tinker had the idea in 2012 of
gathering a number of folk musicians from around the country to write and
record an album to tell some of these stories for the centenary
commemorations in 2014. Jon Boden (Bellowhead), was first to contribute a
track, and, in the spring of 2014, BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year
Bella Hardy, Josienne Clarke, Gilmore & Roberts, The Young’uns,
Tom Oakes and Ian Stephenson (KAN) all went into the studio along with
Michael to put the album together. Produced by award-winning producer Andy
Bell, the project seeks to give a voice to those from the First World War
who have a story to tell: sons and daughters, fathers and mothers, women
and children, left-behind lovers, families and communities, soldiers and
civilians. All with a story to tell; all with a song to be sung. The
project has visited various cities throughout England and hopefully these
live concerts are being recorded... Excellent!
Jen Ord - Jen Ord’s interest in traditional English song first
emerged as a child growing up in Cumbria. Her parents were involved in
local clog and morris sides, which inevitably exposed Jen and her siblings
to a whole repertoire of song and dance as their parents performed at
events and festivals in the region. As Jen’s intrigue grew, so did
her need to learn the music and perform; firstly, taking up the recorder
and accordion to accompany her mum’s clog team. Her father’s
participation in a ceilidh band, and his weekends often occupied by gigs,
prompted Jen to become an adept fiddler and found her own ceilidh band with
her sisters. Accompanying morris and rapper sides on fiddle soon followed.
On this 4 track EP she performs both band driven and a capella tracks
demonstrating a wonderfully elegant instrumental technique, an ear for
sympathetic arrangements and a sweet and fragile voice well suited to the
songs here...;
Gavin Davenport - His songwriting and performance have drawn plaudits
and admiration from some of the biggest names of the folk scene, and his
songs are sung by other well respected performers. His recorded material
has led to comparisons with artists as diverse as Chris Wood, Jim Moray,
Martyn Bennett and Tony Rose. He is a winner of the John Birmingham cup for
newly composed song and as a member of the Albion Band was nominated for
Songlines and Fatea awards in 2013 as well as winning a Spiral Earth award.
His latest album ‘The Bone Orchard’ was a former Folk Radio UK
album of the month, featured in fRoots magazine’s playlist and has received
superb reviews throughout the UK music press, described already as
“one of the best releases of 2013? (Bright Young Folk) it is a
compelling collection of traditional and newly composed material that shows
real respect and understanding for the deep roots of the English Folk
Tradition. Spoiled for choice as to which tracks to play and elected to
select two of his own compositions from this
absolutely fabulous album!
Alice Gerrard - 80 years young traditional music and bluegrass national
treasure singer, banjoist, guitarist, fiddle player and superb songwriter
with a musical career spanning almost 5 decades and encompassing legendary
and highly influential duo albums with Hazel Dickens, critically acclaimed
solo albums, duos with then husband Mike Seeger, and a trio with Tom Sauber
and Brad Leftwich. On this release she revisits and revises some previously
recorded originals, plumbs the tradition anew and takes some choice
selections from some of her contemporaries - superb!
Carolyn Currie - 5th release from this English born, tho New England
raised, 6 & 12 string singer-songwriter and marking her first
Nashville-produced album with singer-songwriter Celeste Krenz in the
producer chair, two songs from the album have won the 2014 Wildflower Music
Festival Songwriting Contest already! Roberta Schwartz from Folk &
Acoustic Music Exchange writes: "Carolyn Currie is a revelation. She
sings as if she is the lead vocalist of a heavenly choir – soft and
sweet, yet haunting and magical. Her finger-picking on six and
twelve-string guitar frames the music and elevates it far beyond the
ordinary singer/songwriter fare. Hers is music that not only soothes the
senses, but is not afraid to move you and make you think. Carolyn Currie
has arrived." Agreed!
Sarah McQuaid – singer- songwriter and dazzling guitarist making a
welcomed return to Little Rock Folk Club on Sat Oct 4th 2014 with her vast
repertoire of trad and self-penned gems, medieval/renaissance pieces and
the occasional choice contemporary piece such as John Martyn’s Solid
Air fitted to her purring vocals – heaven!
Claude Bourbon – French singer- songwriter and dazzling guitarist
also making a welcomed return to Little Rock Folk Club on Sat Sep 27th 2014
bringing along medieval and Spanish blues. Parfait!
