Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston - "In the space of 2 short years,
Miranda Sykes & Rex Preston have emerged to become one of the most
sought after duos on the English folk & roots scene. The striking
combination of the flame headed double bass player & virtuoso mandolin
player create music that Folk Roots say is: “A musical partnership
made in heaven. Scintillating, sensitive and brilliant!” Well known
for the last 8 years as a central component of Show of Hands, Miranda has
an exquisite and spine-tingling voice, whilst Rex, with his exuberant and
flamboyant playing style, has built a reputation as one of the finest
mandolin players in the UK. With Show of Hands off the road for a year, the
duo are embarking on an extensive tour of the
British Isles in support of their arresting new CD “Sing A Full Song”."

On this album they present a choice selection of 11 contemporary songs,
from such excellent writers as Bill Jones, Paul Metsers,
Boo Hewerdine, Oliver Knight, plus one reworked
traditional song, and, augmented by guest guitarist Grant Gordy on flatpick guitar, proceed to give a master class in
performance and arrangement. Outstanding!
Yusuf - formerly singer-songwriter Cat Stevens in an
other lifetime, Yusuf pays tribute to the American R'n'B musical influences that he absorbed in the
nightclubs of early 60s Soho in London with songs
from Edgar Winter, Luther Dixon and Al Smith, Jimmie Davis and Charles
Mitchell, plus a Procol Harum
song from Gary Brooker/Keith Reid, alongside some
of his own compositions that may now be perceived as "spiritual
message music" though to others he continues unchanged - just another
seeker in a Wild World. Guest appearances include Richard Thompson on the
opening track, Charlie Musselwhite on a couple of
tracks, Grammy-award winning Tuareg musicians Tinariwen, and the South African Vocal Choir known as
Complete.
Shelly Posen - Canadian singer-songwriter and 1/3rd of the the splendid Finest Kind, here in homely, nostalgic
mood with an album of uplifting original songs reflecting on earlier
carefree days of childhood and youth long before it became normal for
strangers to randomly poison other complete strangers, or technically savvy
individuals to create software programs that blindly destroys other
peoples' computers. And then, when you are nicely lulled with the warm glow
of a kinder gentler yesteryear, comes songs like "Last Words" or
"Lord Knows, I Wish So Did I" that snap you back to the here and
now, especially those of us of a certain age... another fine addition to
the Posen catalog!
Blue Rose Code - "Blue Rose Code is not folk music. Or so
he’s been told. Ross Wilson, the Edinburgh-born songwriter who
performs under that name, doesn’t write folk songs. But having
discovered the traditional music of the British Isles whilst in exile down
south, he fell in love with what he heard and those sounds informed what
happened next.
Blue Rose Code's latest album, The Ballads Of Peckham
Rye, features a remarkable roll call of musicians from the folk side of the
fence, including Karine Polwart,
Lau’s Aidan O’Rourke and the lead single from Ballads features
Mercury Music Prize Nominee, Kathryn Williams. Ross also toured as the duo,
Hardy & Wilson, with the BBC Radio 2 Folk Singer of the Year, Bella
Hardy. Ross describes his music as “audibly Scottish, Caledonian
Soul” a term borrowed from the music of Van Morrison. "I guess
that I'm a crossover artist,” says Ross. “I'm just not sure
from where I'm crossing over or where I'm going to end up." It's that
reluctance to be boxed or pigeon-holed that has earned Blue Rose Code a
burgeoning and fiercely loyal fan-base across the UK and beyond, with folks
travelling from far and wide to see his three-night sell out show at this years Edinburgh Fringe. At the start of his career,
Ross sent demos to folk clubs in the hope of a gig. One promoter posted his
CD back with a post-it note, scrawled in red that simply said: “Your
music is not folk.” You can’t argue
with that. Or can you?" Artist's website bio...

Songs of the Spanish Civil War Vol I&II -
"Smithsonian Folkways will release Songs of the Spanish Civil War, a
historically vital collection of songs from the 1930s that reintroduces the
hymnal of the Abraham Lincoln Brigade, more than 2,600 American volunteers
who fought General Francisco Franco in support of a democratic Spain.
Featuring Pete Seeger, Tom Glazer, Butch and Bess Hawes, Woody Guthrie,
Ernst Busch, and Bart van der Schelling, this two-volume, single-CD album
aims, as scholar Peter Glazer’s enriching liner notes explain, to
“bring this activist history forward at a time when the causes are no
less urgent, and the enemies of freedom no less dangerous.”
Ranging from stirring folk melodies to adamant rallying cries,
‘Songs of the Spanish Civil War’ serves as a cultural
touchstone. “Viva La Quince Brigada (Long
Live the 15th Brigade),” sung by Pete Seeger, contains one of the
most recognizable refrains of any song from the era: “Rumbala, rumbala,
rumba-la!” Woody Guthrie provides a version of “Jarama,” which was the most popular American song
brought back by veterans." Smithsonian website...
Phil Ochs - "Seemingly dropping in out of nowhere is this
enthralling acoustic live set by late folk troubadour Phil Ochs, recorded
at a small club in East Lansing, Michigan in May 1973 and generously
offering up many of his very best songs. Recorded near the tail-end of his
career (he’d die three years later at the age of 35), the performance
shows him in fine vocal form and offering up humorously acerbic stage patter
that—at least this week—hasn’t seem to have dated in the
least. For stripped-down versions of “Flower Lady,”
“Changes,” “Outside Of A Small Circle Of Friends”
and, of course, “I Ain’t Marching
Anymore,” look no further. This is a great reminder: There have been
very few figures as interesting in popular music, and if you haven’t
heard much by him, here’s your chance." Rolling Stone review
