Jim Boyes w. Belinda O'Hooley - second solo album from masterful songwriter, who
is one third of the critically acclaimed a capella
trio Coope, Boyes &
Simpson (and formerly of the excellent Swan Arcade) who has written a moving
album based upon the experiences of his Grandfather - Robert Riby Boyes from Scarborough
Yorkshire - during the First World War; incorporating new
songs, occasional traditional
melodies, updating lyrics to move his story on when necessary, and poetry and
prose written by Robert Boyes himself, this is an exquisite tribute to a much loved
ancestor that is a credit to both author and subject. Accompanied by the
splendid Belinda O'Hooley ( O'Hooley & Tidow, Nic Jones Trio) on piano, accordion and indeed palpable
musical atmospherics, this is an essential album for any WWI-related music
collection, or anyone interested in the individual humanity of one man in a
world gone mad with war. 6 out of 5 stars!
Thompson Family - various strands of Richard and Linda
Thompson's progeny and nephews, and Richard and Nancy Covey son Jack, under the
organisational umbrella provided by Teddy Thompson to
complete the project, demonstrate no shortage of talent, or indeed of creative
competitiveness.
Leonard Cohen - 80 years young and as creative musically and
lyrically as ever - "Cohen’s new album is as powerful as anything he
has ever recorded. Shifting away from the mortal ruminations of Old Ideas,
Cohen engages with the state of the wider world, contemplating the terrible
lesions of civil war in both the micro and the macro senses, from domestic
strife to international conflict. Producer Patrick Leonard maintains the
organic feel of Old Ideas, but with bluesier grooves
and greater vigour. Cohen’s triumphant return
to the live arena is reflected in the growling assuredness of his vocals. An absolute treat." - Neil McCormick Daily Telegraph
Coope, Simpson, Fraser & Freya
- another outstanding seasonal album from Barry Coope,
Lester Simpson, Fi Fraser & Jo Freya, whose previous releases included Jim
and Georgina Boyes, but on this occasion finds them a
quartet and with the Boyes input comprising the
inclusion of Jim Boyes' Christmas Truce, and Spanking
Roger a tune suggested by Georgina Boyes and fitted
to a fine set of lyrics courtesy of Jo Freya. The bulk of the material comes
from the Yorkshire and Derbyshire carolling
tradition, festive dance music plus four songs from this side of the pond: from
Robbie Robertson (Christmas Must Be Tonight), Shelly Posen (Tis Now The Season
Of The Year), The Bobs (50Kw Tree) and Tom Lehrer (A Christmas Carol) and a
blast from BBC Radio's glorious past The Billy Cotton Band Show of the 60s. If your seasonal music collection needs a lift then look no
further - four glorious voices and an array of instruments... God bless them
every one!
Old Swan Band - "The Old Swan Band celebrate their 40th
anniversary with this eclectic selection of tunes. Whether English, Irish,
Scottish, French Canadian, Australian, traditional or composed, borrowed and/or
adapted, they all end up with that distinctive Old Swan Band
‘stamp’. The musicians who make up this band also play in several
other bands (a dozen or so to be imprecise) and tunes leap across the spaces
between and re-seed themselves. Notes and names change, tempos and keys vary,
but they all end up in the same place – on the dance floor. We hope
you’ll enjoy listening to this music but our abiding wish is that
you’ll roll back the carpet, get the right shoes on and shake a leg.
That’s what legs are for. Old Swan Band are: Fi Fraser – Fiddle,
Paul Burgess -
Fiddle and Octave fiddle, Flos Headford
– fiddle, Jo Freya - Saxes and Whistles, Neil Gledhill – Bass Sax,
John Adams – Trombone, Martin Brinsford –
Harmonica and Percussion, Heather Horsley – Piano Keyboard." - Wildgoose website
Hector Gilchrist w. Vicki Swan & Jonny Dye - Scottish
singer/songwriter/guitarist with a long history of playing in clubs and
festivals without quitting his day job, blessed with a winsome voice which he
puts into the service of Scots traditional songs through Robert Burns and on to
contemporary songs including his own excellent compositions, on this release he
is joined by the multi-instrumental talents of Vicki Swan and Jonny Dyer, and
Moira Craig on harmony vocals...
Brooks Williams - - making a very welcomed return visit to
Little Rock Folk Club on Sat Dec 6th 2014, Brooks is the complete triple threat
- the voice, the guitar chops and the material. Comfortably straddling the
blues/Americana divide he has produced 20 + albums in his 25 year career and each
one bears the stamp of excellence that is his trademark. In concert, it is evident that
Brooks loves his work!
