Anna Shannon - "BBC Radio Yorkshire 2006 Songwriter of the Year Award
winner, hailing from the North Yorkshire National Park, Anna Shannon deeply
embraces all things rustic. On hearing her homespun and organic compositions it
is clear that the wonders of the natural world are the things that strongly colour her narratives. She is an immensely skilled multi-tasker, a creative and strikingly accomplished singer,
songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, arranger and designer, with her own
definite, intense vision and a strong musical identity to match. Born into a
musical family, Anna was, by the age of ten, already accomplished on classical
flute, and at twelve was playing oboe, clarinet and
trumpet. Guitar, fiddle, sax and bowed psaltery followed but it wasn’t
until in her early twenties that she discovered the folk scene. 2006 saw her
first album “The Whale Dreaming” being released after being
encouraged by winning BBC Radio “Yorkshire Songwriter of the Year”
which she had entered on spec. Since that time Anna has released numerous
albums, and her latest, “A Celebration of Old England”, released by
Wild Goose Records, sees her forging a strong path into the heart of
today’s folk club and festival circuit. Anna is carrying on a musical
tradition, finding fresh meaning and relevance for us all in the old
ways." - Artist's website
Said The Maiden - "Said the Maiden are a new
Hertfordshire-based vocal trio, making waves on the folk scene. All musicians
from an early age, they were involved in shows and concerts together at school
in St Albans, but found few outlets for their talents in the working world -
until they learned a couple of songs to play at nearby Redbourn
Folk Club just for fun. When the crowd called for more but they didn't have any
more to sing, they knew they were onto something! Their well-matched vocals and
gorgeous arrangements bring new life to traditional songs, and over time they
have fleshed out their sound with accompaniments on the accordion, ukulele,
guitar, violin and flute." - Artists' website
Tinker, Sprung, Dumpleton - "Bright Season
formed in 2013 bringing together the talents of singer and guitarist Michael J
Tinker, fiddle-player Ella Sprung and accordionist Simon Dumpleton.
Together they perform traditional and self-penned songs and tunes, displaying
their own individual gifts and combining to deliver stunning arrangements and
harmonies. Included in their set are traditional ballads such as The House
Carpenter, a cappella arrangements of John Ball and the shape-note song Africa
and also tune sets drawing on influences from European folk. This is
particularly brought to the fore with Ella’s Nyckelharpa.
Bright Season have toured around the country, and in
addition to playing headline shows they have also supported, among others,
Martin Simpson, Fay Hield and the Hurricane Party and
Josienne Clarke & Ben Walker." - Artists'
website.
An interesting CD that includes old chestnuts such as Shanandoah,
a superb version of Strange Fruit, a very lovely setting of Cicely Fox
Smith's The Yeoman's Son, and Africa, a shape-note hymn amongst some original
compositions. Running at 34 minutes, the material and performances bode well
for future releases from this excellent trio.
John Fullbright - musical tornado from Bearden OK who
encompasses singer/songwriter/Americana/blues material under one gloriously
enjoyable umbrella! His live performances explain the tornado reference :-)
Bruce Cockburn - revered Canadian singer/songwriter/world
searcher/documenter... his third (!) boxed set I believe...
Anne Hills - “Anne Hills is such an exquisite singer that it’s
understandable that people might be swept up in the pure beauty of her voice
and thereby overlook her writing. That would be a mistake. For me, Anne’s
writing, in songs like ‘Follow That Road’ and many others, is as
direct, melodic and deep as any work being done today. She is quite simply one
of my absolute favorite songwriters.” — Tom Paxton.
On this release Anne has gathered together a collection of excellent original
and contemporary train related songs - and, as everyone knows, everyone loves
trains!
