*Shirley Collins: "Shirley and Dolly Collins have long been
regarded as pivotal figures in the English folk song revival of the
1960’s and ’70’s. Shirley’s beautiful singing
style, apparently lacking any affectation, has earned her accolades such as
“the first lady of folk”. Dolly’s contributions to their
recordings were by comparison often overlooked. Her sensitive
accompaniments on piano and portative organ and marvellous
arrangements have rarely been equalled in the
past three decades. Alongside her work with Shirley, Dolly was the arranger
on the late Peter Bellamy’s masterful ‘The Transports’,
as well as his unrecorded ‘We Have Fed Our Seas’. She also
worked on albums by the Incredible String Band, Ian Matthews, Mark
Ellington, Chris Darrow and Tony Rose." - David Suff

Trembling Bells: "Trembling Bells formed in 2008, born from
Glasgow’s close-knit scene, united by shared tastes, passions and
imagination. “We all like music on a forensic level,” says
Neilson. “We’re all obsessive, pedantic, maladjusted,
unemployable nerds.” It is tempting to regard them as a band out of
time, five tempunauts who would rather be hanging
out in the studio of William Morris, or Weimar-era Berlin, or quaffing
cider in Merrie England than in the sometimes tawdry, often dull world of
social networking and digital downloads. They seem profoundly nostalgic,
yearning for the past like a child for its mother. Is that fair comment? “Possibly,”
says Neilson. “I’m a little bit cautious about that because we
get called folk-rock quite a lot. But no, I don’t really relate to much of the modern world. I feel that there’s a
lot to learn from 30,000 years of civilisation.”
That range of cultural and counter-cultural interest is apparent from the
front cover of The Sovereign Self – a series of twenty portraits
painted by Lavinia Blackwall:
an eclectic gallery of genius from Emily Dickinson to Aeschylus; Lou Reed
to Ovid. Another key influence, psych-folk pioneers the Incredible String
Band, has loomed large in the lives of Trembling Bells in recent years.
They have toured with ISB co-founder Mike Heron, performing tracks from his
songbook. “It was a profound pleasure to get inside that
music,” says Neilson. “Everyone in the Trembling Bells grew up
with the Incredible String Band. I remember listening to them on the school
bus and being petrified that anyone would hear what was in my ears. It was
so audaciously imaginative and disarmingly whimsical that it was almost
embarrassing to listen to when you were fifteen. But it really came to
shape the music I aspired to create. When we do the concerts, you can tell
that it means a lot to the people in the audience and it means a lot to me
to play it. It’s music that is very cherishable
because it’s so idiosyncratic.”" - artists' website

Peter Knight's Gigspanner: "has been hailed
by Songlines magazine as "another milestone
in folk’s rebirth of cool", but those in the know will tell you
that there is more to Gigspanner than meets the
eye. Without doubt, a bedrock of British
traditional music is to be expected from Steeleye
Span’s erstwhile legendary fiddle player. But, Gigspanner’s
musical reach flirts audaciously with Eastern European, French, Cajun,
African and even Aboriginal influences, transporting audiences on a
“blistering pace of a musical world tour” (Phil Widdows, Folkcast). It is
appropriate then that author Terry Pratchett wrote that “Peter Knight
can spin the world on his Bow”
Ultimately, the music Gigspanner produces
confounds any attempt to label it, and it is that intriguing, indefinable
ingredient that continues to inspire audiences of all leanings, bringing
them back for more. As a trio they have successfully amalgamated the
diverse sum of their parts, and have honed and polished a brand that is
uniquely theirs. Finding the perfect vehicle to showcase the breadth of his
virtuosity, Peter’s musicianship within the context of Gigspanner is a revelation to those whose only
experience of his playing has been limited to Steeleye
Span. Within Gigspanner, Peter’s
musicianship is further enhanced by the flawless playing of Roger Flack on
Guitar and Vincent Salzfaas on Congas and Djembe.
Both have been described as "powerful and intelligent musicians in
their own right" (Geoff Boudreau, Rye Arts Festival). As a founding
member of Celtic-Rock Band ‘The Tabs’, Roger is primarily a
rock musician who shares Peters’ affinity with traditional material,
whilst Vincent who has studied his craft in Senegal and Cuba, adds another
dimension, one that is distinctly multi-cultural. As R2 magazine noted, it
is Vincent’s musical presence that seals the deal with regard to what
makes ‘Gigspanner different’. What
they do have in common is an unwavering, single minded commitment to dig
deep and to load the music with something of value. Gigspanner’s
audience knows that it is being honoured with a
gift that is the difference between ‘entertaining’ and
‘spellbinding’. Gigspanner’s
Debut Album ‘Lipreading the Poet’ was
named by 'The Wire' as one of the best 15 Global Albums of 2009. But ditch
the pigeonholes. Gigspanner's commitment to
producing "music of intelligently crafted brilliance" (Songlines) has paid off in spades, and they have now
earned their place on the festival and concert stages of the UK and
beyond." - Artists' website
The Milk Carton Kids: "The sweetness and beauty of two voices singing
in harmony, the delicate interplay of two acoustic guitars, and the beauty
and strength of great songwriting." - Mix Magazine... O fully agreed!

MAZ: "With 14 nominations to their credit, including 8 for their
latest album, Chasse-Galerie, MAZ have set
themselves apart with their unique blend of acoustic trad
and electric jazz. Inspired by one of Quebec’s most famous legends,
the group’s concert has been praised by audiences and critics alike,
owing to MAZ’s vibrant stage energy. Marc Maziade
(ELECTRIC GUITAR, BANJO, FOOT PERCUSSION, PROGRAMMING),
Pierre-Olivier Dufresne (VIOLIN, MANDOLIN, FOOT PERCUSSION), Gabriel
Godbout-Castonguay (KEYBOARDS), and Mathieu Royer
(DOUBLE BASS, VIOLIN) invite you to hop on a wild flying canoe and journey
through their unique musical universe. On stage, these brilliant musicians
form a deeply palpable connection, offering trance-inducing grooves,
engaging sound textures, and frenzied foot stomps at each of their intense
performances. With their second album, Chasse-Galerie,
MAZ pushes the envelope and explores the melding of Québec trad and electric jazz that earned the group a Juno
nomination in 2012. Imagine a collective work, where Rhodes piano and
electric guitar walk down the aisle with fiddle, bass and banjo,
accompanied by wild foot percussions. A brilliant interaction among
talented musicians in a universe where trance and texture reveal a unique
modern perspective on Québec’s instrumental culture, past and
present." - P S Pare Website
The Waifs: haven't updated their website since 2011...! "Beloved
Australian folk rock band The Waifs will be releasing BEAUTIFUL YOU on
August 14th. Produced by Nick DiDia (Bruce
Springsteen, Pearl Jam, Powderfinger), the album
was written between the USA and Australia by The Waifs’ songwriting
trifecta of Donna Simpson, Vikki Thorn and Josh Cunningham. The resulting
12-song collection merges the three separate songwriters into a cohesive,
roots-rock musical feast. Along with bassist Ben Franz and drummer David
Ross Macdonald, the five-piece outfit created an album that echoes with
both wisdom and pop appeal. A trip that began in a van in 1992, with the
three troubadours playing gigs anywherein
Australia that would have them, has led The Waifs to multiple ARIA awards,
platinum albums in Australia and successful tours across the world,
including opening for Bob Dylan in North America and Australia in 2003.
True to form, BEAUTIFUL YOU features their trademark sound: “a bit of
Blues and Roots, a bit of Country, a bit of Jazz, anything really." -

Jackie Oates: "is a singer and fiddle player hailing from
Staffordshire. Her unique treatment of English ballads and songs, and pure,
haunting singing style has established her at the forefront of the new
English folk revival. Since appearing as a finalist in the BBC Radio 2
Young Folk Awards 2003, she has performed extensively at festivals and
venues across the country and beyond, in a solo capacity and with her band.
She was a founder member of Northumbrian group and Mercury nominated Rachel
Unthank and the Winterset, Jackie is now a permanent member of the folk
super-group The Imagined Village, as well as touring in her own right.
Jackie has released her sixth studio album, The Spyglass & The
Herringbone (out 27th April 2015 – ECC Records), a record exploring
lesser known but life-affirming songs from the English tradition, drawing
on material dug from the archives, as well as some carefully selected
original works including the title track by band member Chris Sarjeant. Production credits include Afro Celt Sound
System/The Imagined Village’s Simon Emmerson, multi-BBC Folk Award
nominee Ben Walker and Richard Evans, who also produced Jackie’s
previous albums Lullabies and Saturnine. The album features performances by
names from folk and mainstream music including Jim Moray, Andy Gangadeen, John Parker and Jack Rutter." -
