Ange Hardy: 6th release from this award-winning Somerset, UK
singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist (and jewellery
designer!) with an album devoted to the English Romantic poet Samuel Taylor
Coleridge (1772-1834) who spent time around where Ange lives and has a 51
mile walk named after him
(www.visit-exmoor.co.uk/coleridge-way/coleridge-way-home-page). The word
"masterpiece" aptly describes the album for me...
Barrule: "The unique sound of traditional
Manx music is the Celtic World’s best kept secret. This is set to
change with the introduction of Barrule, the
award winning trio hellbent on taking the Isle of
Man’s music to a much wider audience. Named after the famous Manx
summit where legend says the ancient Celtic God Manannan
MacLir stalked his mighty fortress, Barrule fuses three distinct musical forces –
gifted fiddle-player Tomas Callister, accordion
wizard Jamie Smith (of Mabon) and versatile accompanist Adam Rhodes (Mabon
and Manx band King Chiaullee) on bouzouki.
Together this versatile acoustic unit creates a powerful and wholly
distinctive sound. With bold but sensitive arrangements, the trio presents
a fresh take on traditional and contemporary Manx music. While sharing
common ground with its Celtic cousins, as well as the English tradition,
Manx music has retained its own particular and inherent Manxness:
an atmosphere evoked by the music that speaks of the natural beauty of the
island and the lives of its inhabitants. The trio’s award winning
debut album, self-titled Barrule, showcases a
diverse collection of material from rousing marches, jigs and reels to
sorrowful slow airs and beautiful songs sung in the Manx Gaelic language.
Their follow up album, “Manannan’s
Cloak”, was recorded in December 2014 in the historic St.
Bridget’s Chapel, in the Isle of Man’s Nunnery grounds. With
producer Andy Seward at the helm, Manannan’s
Cloak takes the trio’s emphatic sound to the next level, with guest
performances from a support cast that boasts Paul McKenna on vocals, Calum Stewart on uilleann
pipes, Dylan Fowler on lap steel and Tad Sargent on bodhrán,
not to mention the homegrown talents of regular collaborators David Kilgallon (piano) and Gregory Joughin
(vocals). Released in May 2015, Manannan’s
Cloak is already receiving excellent reviews and continues to further the
trio’s mission of promoting Manx music across the globe." -

Dallahan: "since launching the band in
December 2013, Dallahan have exploded onto the
traditional music scene. Their unique arrangements of original music and
traditional Irish tunes and songs have secured their presence at such
prestigious international events as Milwaukee Irish Festival in the USA,
Copenhagen Irish Festival and Celtic Connections. Dallahan
met each other through local sessions in Edinburgh and they are established
performers of various musical styles from classical and jazz to Balkan and
Celtic. The members of the band have toured extensively with groups as
diverse as Kalman Balogh's
Gypsy Cimbalom Band, Larsa, Fianna,
Samling, Tcha Limberger and they regularly appear at festivals and
venues both in the UK and internationally. As individuals, they have
received various awards; Paddy won the 'BBC Young Traditional Musician Of
The Year Award 2013', Ciaran won the title of 'All Britain Banjo Champion'
in 2006, Jani won 1st prize at the first
'Hungarian Traditional Music Competition' and Jack was recently a finalist
in the 'BBC Young Traditional Musician Of The Year Award 2014'. As a band,
they received an 'Emerging Excellence Award' from Help Musicians UK and
were recently nominated for Best Up and Coming Artist of the Year at the
Scots Trad Music Awards 2014. Dallahan
is a breath taking musical journey delivered by award winning musicians
that is as much fun to listen to as it is to play." - Artists' website
Had the great pleasure of seeing these guys live recently at Milwaukee
Irish Festival and all I can say is "Wow!"
Kirsty Bromley: "Kirsty Bromley is a singer, dancer, teacher and
performer of folk music within the English Tradition. She has been in
choirs & musical ensembles from a very early age and much of her
formative years involved immersion in the Brass Band tradition. This
enabled her to make the transition to the ‘other’ English
tradition, a journey which has been rich, eventful and which continues to
challenge her. Kirsty was an inspiring member of Maltby
Phoenix Sword and was part of the outstanding team who were overall
champions at DERT in 2005. Since then she has expanded her dance experience
with other teams including Sandbeck Sword, Triskele Sword, SMUTT Rapper, Rapper Rascals and Pecsaetan Morris. She has performed at most of the UK
festivals and a number on the Continent. She continues to dance and is in
demand as a teacher of rapper, longsword and Cotswold. She has been
involved in several schools and can be seen at many festivals encouraging
the younger generations to get involved and to keep the folk tradition
alive. In addition to her active dancing life Kirsty also sings traditional
folk songs and ballads and this is the area which she is currently active
in developing. She can frequently be heard in many of the sessions around
Sheffield and is a regular member of the Sheffield Ballads Club & The
Sheffield Folk Chorale. You will also find her in both formal & informal
folk festival sessions around the country. Her warm and expressive voice is
distinctive and memorable and she is already winning strong and
enthusiastic support around the country. After winning the prestigious Fred
Jordan Memorial Folk Singing Competition at Bromyard Folk Festival in 2010,
Kirsty has performed at Warwick, Bromyard, and Shepley
Spring Festival 2011 and 2012 as well as numerous folk clubs around the UK.
As well as singing Kirsty has performed at the Beautiful Days Festival with
Dogan & The Deerhunters
on Trumpet. She also played in the Eliza Carthy
Motown Ceilidh Band at Whitby
Folk Week in 2010 and Sidmouth Folk Week
2011." - Artist's website
A glorious debut album of self-penned, trad and
choice contemporary songsmiths' material including Dougie
MacLean, Bill Meek, Chris Wood & Laurel Swift, and Paul Metsers amongst others...
Durham County Poets: "What do you get when you take five musicians
with a back log of tunes and varied influences and put them in a
café with instruments in hand? Chaos maybe? Or perhaps a new vibe, a
fresh approach to music and something worth listening to. This was the case
for Durham County Poets.
“It started with Kevin and myself who wanted
to move onto a new project and decided to meet in a café in Ormstown.” Says Neil, a guitarist and writer for
the band. “I believe Carl was next in the door, followed by Dave and
then Jim. Things just took off from there.” That was in 2011, and by
July 2012 their first album ‘Where the river flows’ was
released. Produced by drummer John McColgan, who
drew on his many years of experience recording and performing with everyone
from Emmy Lou Harris to Jimmy James and the McGarrigle
Sisters to Michael Jerome Browne. The result was a collection of songs that
much like the river in its title seemed to flow effortlessly, one into the
other. Kevin states that the feel of the album is very organic. “We
recorded it live off the floor for the most part. Wanting to capture the
room sound and the groove you get only from playing in close contact with
each other. You can here it in the sound of the record, it's airy and not overly processed, very organic
for sure.” It's easy to understand what he means when listening for
the first time. From the sound of the opening door, the geese honking overhead
and the footsteps that lead to the first chord of the title track,
‘Where the river flows’. This album takes you on a journey from
start to finish, with influences drawing from the Band, James Taylor, to
straight up blues, gospel and folk. Fast forward to 2015 with a second
album ‘Chikkaboodah stew’, released
in mid 2014, Durham County Poets aren’t
losing momentum. The front cover of the album shows a pot filled with
instruments that are simmering away in a steaming hot broth. The idea
behind it, according to the band, was to bring together a musical blend of
influences, styles and genres all in one album. And they are right about
that. ‘Chikkaboodah stew’ covers the
gamut from folk to blues, jazz to crooner, swing to ballad and even a
little rock, prog and gospel influence. Peppered
with Hammond B3 organ, horns, stellar violin and clarinet and some over the
top backup singing. This is a stew meant to be savoured
and preferably jarred so one can try it at their leisure. “We have so
many bands and artists that have inspired us to do what we do. Durham
County Poets is not just about folk or any other style for that matter.
It's just about good honest music, whether plugged in or acoustic”
says Dave." - Artists' website
