(VA) Joy Of Living: A tribute to Ewan MacColl:
"Known as the godfather of the first British folk revival, Ewan MacColl is hailed for writing such classic songs as
“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Dirty Old
Town,” “The Shoals of Herring” and “The Joy of
Living.” JOY OF LIVING: A TRIBUTE TO EWAN MACCOLL is an flawlessly formed centenary tribute to the multi-talented
artist from MacColl’s two sons, Calum and Neill. This 2-CD set features new
interpretations of MacColl’s songs from
artists who span the worlds of pop, rock, and folk. Rather than trying to
be a definitive collection, it provides a testament to the range and
influence of this remarkable singer and songwriter. Highlights include
Steve Earle’s take on “Dirty Old Town,” Norma
Waterson’s peerless rendition of the plight of the travelers in
“The Moving On Song,” Paul Buchanan’s (Blue Nile)
crooning “First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” Bombay Bicycle
Club’s moving version of “The Young Birds” and Rufus
& Martha Wainwright’s performance of “Sweet Thames Flow
Softly.” Additional contributors are many—evidence of MacColl’s far-reaching influence– and
include such impressive names as Paul Brady, Billy Bragg, Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Damien
Dempsey, Dick Gaughan, David Gray, Christy Moore,
Karine Polwart, and
Martin Simpson. Joy of Living: A Tribute to Ewan MacColl
pays homage to this fearless, uncompromising character whose influence is
still felt not only within but far beyond the folk world.” –

The Urban Folk Quartet: second release from UFQ then comprising Joe
Broughton, Paloma Trigás, Tom Chapman and
Frank Moon... currently "Joe Broughton, Paloma Trigás,
Tom Chapman and Dan Walsh are The Urban Folk Quartet. Since forming in
2009, The UFQ’s genre-defying, all-embracing approach to folk music
has captivated audiences in high-energy performances across the world. 2015
brings “The Escape”, a brand new studio album showcasing
material that the band have crafted over the course of their first year
with their latest member, banjo player, guitarist and singer Dan Walsh. The
Escape Tour takes place across the UK this year, as well as taking in dates
in France, Belgium and Denmark. The Urban Folk Quartet’s
distinguishing features have much less to do with the traditional idea of
genre. Yes, this is fiddle-led music that draws heavily from celtic dance forms and traditional song but from there on
in it is unlike any folk band you have ever heard. Just as English country
dance unassumingly met with big band jazz musicianship in the mid 20th century, The UFQ’s approach to the folk
ethos is to embrace any and every influence that genuinely makes sense of
their time and place and makes sense in their music. From funk grooves to
middle-eastern melodies, afrobeat to north Indian
rhythms.”
“A sizzling hot ensemble who fuse folk with elements of dub, house
and rock with an ease that shouldn’t naturally follow that list of
genres. Built on the rhythms of a cajón-wielding
percussionist and oud-playing bassist, the phenomenal fiddlers led the
quartet in one of the tightest line-ups I have ever seen.” - Olivia
Haughton, Songlines
The first of those phenomenal fiddlers is Galician Paloma Trigás, who has shared stages and recorded with with the likes of The Chieftains, Sharon Shannon and Altan, during her tenure touring the stadiums of the
world with Spain’s biggest folk star, Carlos Nuñez.
The second is Joe Broughton (Albion Band,) long established on the folk
scene as the fieriest English fiddler and showman of his generation. Also
an exceptional guitarist and mandolin player, in The UFQ Joe deftly shares
multi-instrumentalist duties (often mid-song) with Dan Walsh. Touted as one
of the finest banjo players in the country as well as a gifted singer and
guitarist, Dan (Seth Lakeman Band, The Levellers, Walsh & Pound)
joined UFQ in 2014, as guitarist, oud player and founding member Frank Moon
stepped out of touring life. The lineup is completed by Tom Chapman, widely
considered to be the most accomplished and innovative cajonero
the UK has to offer." - Artists' website
Archie Fisher: "Master guitarist, Archie Fisher is one of
Scotland’s foremost folksinger/ songwriters. He is known throughout
the country as the host of BBC Radio Scotland’s award-winning
'Travelling Folk' programme, which he presented
for over 25 years. Recognized for his contributions to Scottish folk music,
in 2007 he was inducted into the Scots Traditional Music Hall of Fame and
in 2006 was awarded an MBE for services to traditional music. The most
recent recognition of his art came in 2008 when he was granted the
Tradition Bearers Award from the Goderich Celtic Roots Festival in Canada.
Archie was born in Glasgow into a large singing family, which yielded three
professional singers, Archie and his sisters Ray and Cilla Fisher. Constant
music, combined with his father’s appreciation of many musical styles
(opera, music hall, traditional ballads) had a strong impact on
Archie’s musical development, while his mother, a native Gaelic
speaker from the Outer Hebrides, was a strong influence on the lyrical
quality of his singing and songwriting." - www.scottish-folk-music.com/bands-singers-pages/singer-archie-fisher.htm
Honeyed voice, silken fingers - sheer magic!
Loren and Mark: Bringing their highly polished performance to Little Rock
Folk Club on Sat Oct 24th "Loren Barrigar
and Mark Mazengarb share a unique musical
chemistry and stage presence seldom found among musicians. Their diverse
repertoire of original and arranged music consists of stunning guitar
instrumentals as well as vocal duets, giving them wide appeal and strong
audience connection. Influenced by Americana, Jazz, Country Western and
Classical music, Loren and Marks unique style of guitar playing is largely
built upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitar greats Merle
Travis and Chet Atkins, and their songs feature Loren’s superb vocals
with some beautiful harmonies from Mark. Guitar playing like you've never
heard before! Loren and Mark first met in 2005 when they spent a few days
working with the great Tommy Emmanuel at Jorma Kaukonen’s
Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp. Mark was a college kid, just completing his
degree in classical guitar at the University of North Carolina; Loren was
already a seasoned performer, but it was his first serious look at acoustic
guitar. After the workshop, Mark visited Loren and they spent some time
picking guitar – and picking each other’s brains. In 2009 they
met again in Nashville at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS)
convention, an international gathering of hundreds of guitarists. That set the
stage for the 2010 CAAS convention where they were on the schedule of
performers. Though they were not originally listed to play on the big
Saturday night finale, they were added to the show due to popular demand
from those who heard them throughout the week. Loren and Mark's varied
repertoire of original and arranged music consists of stunning guitar duets
as well as songs, giving them a wide appeal. Their music is influenced by
Bluegrass, Jazz and Western; their style of guitar playing is largely built
upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitar greats Merle Travis,
Chet Atkins and Jerry Reed, and their songs feature Loren’s superb

Melisande: "Canadian Folk Music Awards 2014
Recipient – Traditional Singer of the Year and Independent Music
Awards 2015 Nominee – World Beat album of the Year
Drawing from a rich heritage of traditional French-language songs, Mélisande unearths rare treasures that she
adapts and presents with a feminist perspective and the distinctly modern
sound of the band. The quartet plays an energetic blend of traditional
music, rock and electro-pop with a mix of acoustic and electric
instruments, vocal harmonies and sequencing. Comprised of four talented and
established musicians, the group offers a fresh artistic proposal to the
folk-world-trad music scene. Its first album Les métamorphoses, greatly acknowledged byt the critics here and abroad, was released in May
2014 on La Prûche Libre,
an independent label co-owned by one of Québec’s folk music
legends Yves Lambert. Mélisande’s
rich musical background and her mesmerizing voice give a fresh take on
these traditional songs that she delivers with strong personality. Often
groovy, sometimes atmospheric, the songs convey the audience to a journey
through time and space to discover timeless realities of women’s
life. The group can get a festival crowd dancing or captivate them in a
concert setting. Mélisande [électrotrad] released its first music video Le
vin est bon last November before going on tour in
Québec and Australia. They are currently promoting their album in
the US with the support of Hearth Music and will showcase at the Folk
Alliance International conference in Kansas City.” – artists’ website

Chris and Siobhan Nelson: “first got together back in the mid-1980s,
when they were both members of The Cluster of Nuts Band, who were part of
the British 'rogue folk' movement back in the 1980s. Siobhan joined the
band shortly after release of their acclaimed album Fridge in the Fast Lane
(which featured such folk luminaries as Ian Telfer of the Oyster Band, John
Adams of the New Victory Band [etc.] and Cathy Lesurf
of the Albion Band). Chris and Siobhan have been members of various other
bands over the years; and they've just started doing occasional gigs with
the 'Nuts' again. Chris and Siobhan have appeared at numerous festivals and
folk clubs over the years, in their various guises: as a duo,
and as members of Cluster of Nuts, New St George (the UK one), Nelsons
Wake, Loose Screws Appalachian Dancers & String Band and Kaleidoscope;
Chris was also a member of the Midnight Flyers and currently plays with the
Merseybillies. In their current
incarnation, as a duo, Chris and Siobhan have run festival workshops on
Appalachian Clogging for Beginners and Home Recording. They
spent many years living in Southampton, Hampshire, before relocating to
Southport, Merseyside, where they are residents at the Bothy
Folk Club.” – artists’ website
Pete Rimmer: "Pete! Pete has been a long
standing resident singer at the Bothy, having
first visited the club in 1967 and stayed on to see if this fad would last.
It of course has and Pete has been part of not only the club but of most
other the activities such as the early Southport Swords, Southport Mummers,
Mr Blundell's Alms Band. Pete also plays from
time to time with Paul Reid and Bill Hackney and Bev Sanders and is part of
a new Band called League Of Friends. In 1999 Pete released his first CD
called "Fill my pockets...with rain" with many Bothy friends helping out. Pete says, "As long as
the Bothy Folk Club keeps running, so will
I"" - www.bothyfolkclub.8m.com/pete.html
Beppe Gambetta & Tony McManus: two master guitarists at the height of
their careers both of whom have performed for Little Rock Folk Club: Tony
many years ago as sideman to the great Brian McNeill, and Beppe who is an
not-infrequent visitor to LRFC over the past several years. The album oozes
quality both in performance and material which includes fingerbusting
guitar pieces, majestic soundscapes from the Italian sacred canon,
sumptuous jigs and reels from the Celtic canon and a couple of glorious
songs from Beppe, one in Italian (Valzer Per Un
Amore by Fabrizio de Andre) and one in English (Slightly Go Blind by John Herald)and both
performed and sung superbly.
