Hilary James:"Hilary James' "elegant
singing" (Daily Telegraph) has received much acclaim: quintessentially
English but easily crossing the great musical divides from British folk
ballads to blues and Berlioz. She's famed too for an unlikely taste in bass
instruments (she could turn up with her giant mandobass
or slimline, semi-acoustic double bass). Her fine
guitar accompaniments cross the genres from Vivaldi to bluegrass and she
might even manage a step-dance if the wind is in the right direction."

Pure quality in all spheres!
Derek Gifford: "developed a love of singing from his early experiences
in his school choir. Later while working as an Ordnance Surveyor he also
worked as a part-time youth club leader, singing mostly contemporary folk
songs with the young people. This experience developed his interest in folk
song and eventually led to a new career in teaching. Derek first discovered
the English tradition at the Drover’s Arms Folk Club in Birmingham in
the late 1960s. It was here he met some of the people that were to
influence his already developing traditional style
such as Pete and Chris Coe, Mick Bramich
and Paul Ryan. When the O. S. posted Derek to Malvern, Worcestershire at
the end of the 60s it wasn’t long before he became a resident at the
Ledbury Folk Club (as well as continuing to be a resident at the
Drover’s Arms) and became a founder member of the Silurian Morrismen. He moved to Lancashire in 1970 to train as a
teacher. In his early days in the North West Derek was involved with the
College folk club and joined the Southport Swords, where he made some long
standing friendships. The 1990s was a period of consolidation and
development. Following his early retirement from teaching Derek’s
first singing trip to Australia in 1998 gave him some international
recognition. He could now go on tour without having to wait for the school
holidays to start. Early in the Millennium Derek also joined forces with
Geoff Higginbottom and Keith Kendrick to form the
group ‘Three Sheets to the Wind’ specialising
(obviously!) in maritime material. Although they can’t perform
together as often as they’d like due to their other commitments in
the music scene, they can be seen from time to time at various clubs and
festivals throughout the country. They have released a CD
“All ‘Tide’ Up” (pun intended!) which has
been a hit among shanty aficionados" - artist's website.
Tymon Dogg: "is a
multi-instrumentalist singer-songwriter who has pursued his own unique
sound and remained true to his artistic and political vision throughout a
40 year career that has included collaborations with a wide variety of musicians from Paul McCartney through The Clash
to Flamenco superstar, the late Enrique Morente.
Tymon was a member of Joe Strummer’s Mescaleros
until Joe’s untimely death in 2002." - artist's
website.
Gilmore & Roberts: "Conflict Tourism is the fourth album from
award-winning duo Gilmore & Roberts. Following a year of touring in
mainland Europe, Canada, and their native Britain, Katriona
Gilmore and Jamie Roberts noticed a common thread running through their
latest crop of original songs. Conflict, whether an internal struggle
between positive and negative, or a healthy body and a disease, is an
everyday phenomenon captured perfectly by these 11 tracks. Previously
nominated twice at the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, Gilmore & Roberts cover
a broader and more contemporary genre-spectrum than might be expected from
a duo wielding guitar, fiddle and mandolin. Produced by Mark Tucker and
featuring Matt Downer (Jamie Smith's Mabon), Phil Henry (Phillip Henry
& Hannah Martin) and James 'Hutch' Hutchinson (Bonnie Raitt), Conflict Tourism packs a considered punch from
start to finish. From the industrial weight of 'Cecilia' and the insistent
energy of 'Peggy Airey' to the hauntingly hypnotic 'Jack O Lantern',
Gilmore & Roberts' songwriting inflicts multiple earworms after a
single listen.
"Conflict is universal - everyone, everywhere, experiences it every
day, in its smallest forms" says Katriona.
"We liked the idea of being tour guides through a minefield of
different decisions and drama."
"And good tour guides are passionate about what they're showing
you" adds Jamie. "They're not detached from the subject. It's
personal - it's people and stories. That's the starting point for every
song."
Having already made a name for themselves on the UK acoustic circuit,
Gilmore & Roberts are known as much for their exceptionally dynamic
live show as they are for their prize-winning songs. With international
tours and a formidable new album newly wedged under their belts, the duo are racing from strength to strength. Pay no
attention to tour guides who read from the script - these two speak from
the heart." - artists' website
(VA) Joy Of Living;: "A tribute to Ewan MacColl:
"Known as the godfather of the first British folk revival, Ewan MacColl is hailed for writing such classic songs as
“The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face,” “Dirty Old
Town,” “The Shoals of Herring” and “The Joy of
Living.” JOY OF LIVING: A TRIBUTE TO EWAN MACCOLL is an flawlessly formed centenary tribute to the
multi-talented artist from MacColl’s two
sons, Calum and Neill. This 2-CD set features new
interpretations of MacColl’s songs from
artists who span the worlds of pop, rock, and folk. Rather than trying to
be a definitive collection, it provides a testament to the range and
influence of this remarkable singer and songwriter. Highlights include
Steve Earle’s take on “Dirty Old Town,” Norma Waterson’s
peerless rendition of the plight of the travelers in “The Moving On
Song,” Paul Buchanan’s (Blue Nile) crooning “First Time
Ever I Saw Your Face,” Bombay Bicycle Club’s moving version of
“The Young Birds” and Rufus & Martha Wainwright’s
performance of “Sweet Thames Flow Softly.” Additional
contributors are many—evidence of MacColl’s
far-reaching influence– and include such impressive names as Paul
Brady, Billy Bragg, Eliza Carthy, Martin Carthy, Damien Dempsey, Dick Gaughan,
David Gray, Christy Moore, Karine Polwart, and Martin Simpson. Joy of Living: A Tribute
to Ewan MacColl pays homage to this fearless,
uncompromising character whose influence is still felt not only within but
far beyond the folk world." - Compass Records webpage
Karine Polwart: "Four-times winner at The BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards, twice
for Best Original Song, her most recent album Traces (produced by Iain Cook
of Chvrches) was shortlisted for both the
Scottish Album of the Year Award and BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards Album of the
Year. The Guardian chose it as international folk-roots release of 2012.
Her debut solo album Faultlines won Best Album at
the BBC Radio 2 Folk Awards back in 2005, following six years of touring as
a traditional Scots singer with Malinky and
Battlefield Band." - artist's website
David Gray: "is an English indie rock singer-songwriter.
Gray released his first studio album in 1993 and received worldwide
attention after the release of White Ladder six years later. It was the
first of three UK chart-toppers in six years for Gray, the latter two of
which also made the Top 17 in the US. White Ladder became the fifth
best-selling album of the 2000s in the UK. Gray has been nominated for four
Brit Awards – twice for Best British Male." - Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/David_Gray_(musician)
Loren and Mark: Bringing their highly polished performance to Little Rock
Folk Club on Sat Oct 24th "Loren Barrigar
and Mark Mazengarb share a unique musical
chemistry and stage presence seldom found among musicians. Their diverse
repertoire of original and arranged music consists of stunning guitar
instrumentals as well as vocal duets, giving them wide appeal and strong
audience connection. Influenced by Americana, Jazz, Country Western and
Classical music, Loren and Marks unique style of guitar playing is largely
built upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitar greats Merle
Travis and Chet Atkins, and their songs feature Lorens superb vocals with some beautiful
harmonies from Mark. Guitar playing like you've never heard before! Loren
and Mark first met in 2005 when they spent a few days working with the
great Tommy Emmanuel at Jorma Kaukonen’s
Fur Peace Ranch guitar camp. Mark was a college kid, just completing his
degree in classical guitar at the University of North Carolina; Loren was
already a seasoned performer, but it was his first serious look at acoustic
guitar. After the workshop, Mark visited Loren and they spent some time
picking guitar – and picking each other’s brains. In 2009 they
met again in Nashville at the Chet Atkins Appreciation Society (CAAS)
convention, an international gathering of hundreds of guitarists. That set
the stage for the 2010 CAAS convention where they were on the schedule of
performers. Though they were not originally listed to play on the big
Saturday night finale, they were added to the show due to popular demand
from those who heard them throughout the week. Loren and Mark's varied
repertoire of original and arranged music consists of stunning guitar duets
as well as songs, giving them a wide appeal. Their music is influenced by
Bluegrass, Jazz and Western; their style of guitar playing is largely built
upon the thumb-picking techniques pioneered by guitar greats Merle Travis,
